Ratio:-

            The division of two numbers is known as Ratio. It is denoted by (:).

            Example: 5:7 or 5/7 , 2:3 or 2/3 etc.

Type and Ratio Short Trick 1: ratio and proportion formulas

If A : B = X : Y and B : C = P : Q ,then:-

  1. A : C = X x P : Y x Q
  2. A : B : C = (X : Y) x P :Y x Q = X x P : Y x P : Y x Q

                 or        A    :    B   :   C

                            X    :   Y

                                \      |      \

                                      P     :    Q

                        ___________________

                         X x P : Y x P : Y x Q

   Example: If  A : B = 4 : 5 and B : C = 6 : 7 then, find value of A : C ?

Type and Ratio Short Trick of  2: ratio and proportion formulas

              If A : B = X : Y , B : C = P : Q and C : D = M : N then:-

  1. A : D = X x P x M : Y x Q x N
  2. A : B : C : D = (XP : YP : YQ) x M : Y x Q x N
  3. = XPM : YPM : YQM : YQN

Example:  If A : B = 3 : 4 , B : C = 8 : 9 and C : D = 12 : 13 then, find value of A : D ?

Important question of ratio and proportion asked in previous exam

Q1 Divide Rs. 672 in the ratio 5: 3.  ६७२ को ५:३ में विभाजित करो

ANS: Sum of ratio terms = (5 + 3) = 8.

First part = Rs. (672 x 5/8) = Rs. 420;

Second part = Rs. (672 x 3/8) =

Rs.   252.

Q2 Divide Rs. 1162 among A, B, C in the ratio 35: 28: 20. ११६२ को  A, B, C  में ३५: २८:२० में विभाजित करो.

ANS: Sum of ratio terms = (35 + 28 + 20) = 83.

A’s share = Rs. 1162 x35/83) = Rs. 490; B’s share = Rs.   1162×28/83) = Rs. 392

Q3 A bag contains 50 p, 25 p and 10 p   coins in the ratio 5: 9: 4, amounting to rs 206. Find the number of coins of each type.

एक बैग में ५० पैसे , २५ पैसे एवं  १० पैसे के सिक्के ५:९:४ में हे; जो २०६ रुपए  हे. हर प्रकार के कितने सिक्के हे

ANS: Let the number of 50 p, 25 p and 10 p coins be 5x, 9x and 4x respectively.

5x 9x 4x Then

5x/2 + 9x/4 + 4x/10

=206 50x + 45x + 8x

= 4120  = 103x = 4120  x = 40.

Number of 50 p coins = (5 x 40) = 200;

Number of 25 p coins = (9 x 40) = 360;

Number of 10 p coins = (4 x 40) = 160

Q4 A mixture contains alcohol and water in the ratio 4: 3. 115 liters of water is added to the mixture, the ratio becomes 4: 5. Find the quantity of alcohol in the gives mixture.

Ratio Proportion Short Tricks

ANS: Let the quantity of alcohol and water be 4x liters and 3x liters respectively Then. 4x / (3x+5) = 4/5 = 20x = 4 (3x + 5)  8x = 20  x = 2.5. =3x+5 5 Quantity of alcohol = (4 x 2.5) liters = 10 liters

Type and Ratio Short Trick 3: formula for ratio and proportion

  1. If  A : B : C : D = W : X : Y : Z and D : E = M : N  then

                                     and

     2. If  A : B : C : D = W : X : Y : Z and D : E : F = L : M : N  then

Example: If  A : B : C : D = 3 : 2 : 5 : 4 and D : E = 3 : 5  then find A : B : C : D : E ?

Type and Ratio Short Trick 4: formula for ratio and proportion

  1. First proportion       ,    a = (b x c) / d
  2. Second proportion    ,    b = (a x d) / c
  3. Third proportion      ,     c = (a x d) / b
  4. Fourth proportion     ,     d = (b x c)/ a

Example:  ? : 3 : : 15 : 9

ratio and proportion aptitude tricks

Type and Ratio Short Trick 5: ratio and proportion aptitude tricks

By expiration a : b : : b : c :-

  1. First proportion       ,    a = (b^2) / c
  2. Second proportion    ,    b = (ac)^(1/2)
  3. Third proportion      ,     c = (b^2) / a

Example:Find the first proportion of 6 and 9.

Type and Ratio Proportion Short Tricks 6:

If X has to divide in ratio of P and between Q has to divide into ratio of A : B, then

  1. Part of P = {a / (a+b)} x X
  2. Part of Q = {b / (a+b)} x X
  3. Difference between parts of P and Q = {(a-b) / (a+b)} x X          [where   a > b]
